The two artists I chose for my self potraits are Tamara de Lempicka and Ethel Walker.
This piece by Lempicka is titled "Self-Potrait in a Green Bugatti". I really like the style of it, and the overall feeling it gives. It is inspired by cubist works and used an extremely subtle complementary color scheme between the color of her hair lips and the color of the car, red and green/blue and orange. The composition is interesting to us because she uses a lot of diagonal lines to pull us towards her face. The direction of the lines is also interesting because it helps give us the feeling that she is actually moving in the car, and not just sitting still. Tamara intended for her self-portrait to reflect her luxurious life, giving her an elegant expression and placing herself in a pricy labeled car. This piece was created in 1929.
Walker's piece, titled after herself, "Dame Ethel Walker", shows us Walker dressed in what appears to be a suit and tie. Her works were largely inspired by the impressionism movement, as seen in the "blurry" painting style and soft, dim coloring. Her clothing choice is interesting considering at the time this may have been seen as odd for women, but she is known as a queer artist by several sources, so this self-portrait was probably reflective of how she preferred to dress and appear. Her color choice is also interesting, as a lot of her other works appear far brighter than this one.
