Parmigianino - Self Portrait in a Convex Mirror
The first artist is Parmigianino. His is very unique in that it was painted while he was looking into a convex mirror. As a result, it makes everything look askew, such as the way the ceiling curves and his body proportions are off.
Gustave Courbet - The Desperate Man (Self-Portrait)

What stood out to me the most was the overall mood the painting conveyed. Both his expression and pose give a feeling of anxiety and desperation (Which is obviously where the artwork got its name). It also uses a monochromatic olive green color scheme, with a bit of red in the face. This helps tell the viewer where to look.
